Hi I am Mariska Nell. I am originally from South Africa and I am an artist, designer and more recently an environmentalist. I used to be an average consumer, I used to use many coffee capsules, those bright and beautiful ones, I then started collecting them to create something beautiful with all the colours, but then I realised just how much waste I was creating. My journey towards sustainability began at this point and since then I have dedicated my life to learning more about the effects we have on the environment, what we can do to limit our impact and to create awareness everywhere I can.
The little changes I see in the world is what inspires me most, like a child insisting that his mother not take a plastic bag at the supermarket. Those little things gives me hope for the future, hope for our planet and drives me to continue to learn, do more personally and to share my journey with others. If through my efforts, and my art I can reach people who in turn also start making a positive change and sharing their own stories, we will through this connection start to save our planet.
I have worked with a number of high profile clients including South African comedian and The Daily Show Host, Trevor Noah, Actor and Environmentalist, Adrian Grenier, Entrepreneur, Gary Vaynerchuck, Kris Fade, a radio presenter for the Kris Fade radio show on Virgin Radio Dubai, Black Coffee a world-renowned DJ and producer and Mason Plumlee an NBA basketball player for the Denver Nuggets. As well as larger corporations such as Nespresso, Sarood Hospitality (formerly Jumeirah Restaurant Group), Costa and DXB.
The most successful exhibition was a collaboration with Costa Coffee and DXB Airports to exhibit a 2x2x2 meter sculpture made from 60,000 straws. The piece was exhibited at DXB to create awareness of plastic waste for World Environment day.
I have also been awarded the most Most Sustainable Design and Highly Commended awards at the Surge for Water ‘design, dine, make a difference’ event.
