I’m Abdul Muqeet, the Environment and Community Grassroots Ambassador for MEYE 2020. In 2010, the government launched a campaign – “UAE Free of Plastic Bags” – which inspired my commitment to saving the environment. I wanted to do my bit to support the cause and decided to create 100% recycled carry bags using discarded newspapers. In the first year, I created over 7,000 paper bags from newspapers and donated them to the community, which inspired more people and it became a larger community initiative. Since then, I have led workshops at schools, private companies and government entities, and due to our collective efforts, my school and a number of companies in Abu Dhabi have switched to paper bags.
In 2011, I was selected to attend the United Nation’s Tunza conference in Indonesia to speak about my commitment to a cleaner environment through the paper bag initiative. I have also been honored to represent the UAE at a number of conferences locally as well as internationally. I’m an active participant in local environment campaigns such as the ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ campaign organized by the Center for Waste Management – Abu Dhabi.
